Differential Scanning Calorimetry – DSC Mettler Toledo
Our dedicated in-house Chemical Reaction Hazards Specialist carries out Differential Scanning Calorimetry on an automated Mettler Toledo DSC on solid or liquid samples. A DSC measures the difference in heat flow rate (mW = mJ/sec) between a sample and inert reference as a function of time and temperature. This gives information on thermal stability and acts as an early screening system against potentially hazardous processes. The DSC scan is interpreted by the CRHS and allows the design of further experiments to ensure a safe scale-up of chemical operations.
Advanced Reactive System Screening Tool - ARSST Fauske
This is an adiabatic calorimeter that can quickly and safely identify potential chemical hazards in the process. ARSST data yields critical experimental knowledge of the rates of temperature and pressure rises during a runaway reaction, thereby providing reliable energy and gas release data which can be applied directly to full scale process conditions. Foreseeable deviations and worst case scenarios can be explored with the ARSST, with the information generated used to design safeguards, including vent sizing, to prevent any serious incidents occurring.
Adiabatic Calorimetry - ChemiSens
Using the CPA 107 the Chemical Reaction Hazards Specialist can reliably replicate the process in order to study the kinetics of the process. This allows measurement of the heat of reaction which determines the potential adiabatic temperature increase and MTSR. Batch and semi-batch methodology can be contrasted with the accumulation of raw material(s) calculated. The ChemiSens calorimeter is capable of working at high and low temperatures and under pressure allowing accurate data capture for hydrogenations.

Scaling up at Robinson Brothers from laboratory nominally 1L to 200L Pilot Plant scale entails a fixed procedure which is summarised in the flow chart below, this ensured safety, robustness of the process and the quality of the product produced.
